The Ahaggar Mountains (Arabic: جبال هقار, Berber: idurar n Ahaggar), also known as the Hoggar, are a highland region in central Sahara, or southern Algeria, along the Tropic of Cancer. They are located about 1,500 km south of the capital, Algiers and in proximity to the Saharan town of Tamanrasset. The region is a plateau of volcanic rock with an average altitude of more than 900 metres above sea level. The highest point, Jebel Tahat, is at 2,908m and this is the highest mountain in Algeria, the fourth highest in the Sahara.
Assekrem is a famous and often visited point where the French priest Charles de Foucauld built a refuge in 1911.
